27 April 2020 – Face Your Emotions

Weekly YES Quote!

“We are so unused to emotion that we mistake any depth of feeling for sadness, any sense of the unknown for fear, and any sense of peace for boredom.

Weekly Reflection

One month down and a questionable amount left to go before we can embark on the daily life which people have commonly begun to reference as the “new normal.”

There are times when I find myself complacent, angry, sad, happy, driven, determined, insecure, uncertain, worrisome… the full spectrum of emotion.

Like a roller coast ride: up and down and up and down… oh [bleep] here comes a loopty-loop… woosh, I made it… oh thank goodness there’s the platform! Now please miss unlock this restraint so I can get up out of this seat and be on my own two feet again, thanks.

There are days when I’m confidently looking at the glass half full.

My housemate and I have turned our living room into a multi-functional space since we can’t get our sweat on at our favorite establishments.

He purchased floor mats, an incline bench, resistance bands, and brought his dumbbells up from storage. I purchased a new yoga mat, revamped my yoga practice 3-4 times per week, started getting outside to walk and run more, and yesterday I rejoined my favorite gym by working out while partaking in their Instagram Live feed.

And when I’m not working out and don’t have a valid reason to venture outside, I take advantage of being in the comfort of my own home by blogging more and consistently posting the weekly yes quote for you beautiful readers!

I hold onto these moments and a list full of others to keep my head above water when it feels like I’m about to lose it. These are the moments that will help get us through this and many other hard-to-face obstacles down the road.

We’ve all been forced to live with ourselves whether we like it or not.

We’ve had to make sacrifices and changes in order to not less ourselves become overwhelmed or emotionally distraught.

We’ve been thrown out of our comfort zones and that is just plain scary.

This is an emotional time for everyone.

And how we handle these emotions is completely within our control. We have the power to face these emotions and not let them get the better of us.

I could’ve been a huge grump-bot who decided to gain 15 pounds like my freshman year of college all over again, but instead I decided to stop feeling sorry for myself because I couldn’t go to the gym and make a way to get that endorphin high I need in order to be the positive minded person that I am.

I could’ve felt lonely, awkward, and disconnected because I was forced to stay inside, but instead I chose to dedicate my new time from home to blog and share my thoughts with you in writing.

I don’t know where we’re going to go as a society… I have some solid educational hunches, but nothing concrete.

But I do know that my emotions aren’t going to better me or send me down a nasty rabbit hole.

I control my emotions just as you have control over your own emotions.

Weekly Challenge

Take this week to really focus on your emotions.

Don’t brush your emotions to the side or decide to put them in your cute memory box to maybe come back to later. Those emotions will simply fester and come back even stronger, more powerful, and maybe even more confusing than they were when you chose not to give them the attention they deserved in the first place.

Just as Mark Nepo from his book The Book of Awakening: Having the Life You Want by Being Present to the Life You Have says,

“We are so unused to emotion that we mistake any depth of feeling for sadness, any sense of the unknown for fear, and any sense of peace for boredom.

Embrace the deep feelings you’re harboring no matter if these emotions are ugly, sad, or just downright depressing… setting them aside will exponentially ___

Embrace the unknown and the possibilities it will bring you. You have the power to do anything and everything in order to reach your goals. The only reason you even think there is an unknown is because you haven’t committed to what you will have and what’s required of you to get you there.

Lastly, and maybe most importantly, embrace the peace. I have mistaken the peace I’ve been blessed with for heavy boredom because I’ve always been a go go go person.

I would wake up, struggle to get ready to leave for the office (I am not a morning person), be productive and engaged in my daily work activities, find a good place to stop for the day, hustle over to the gym, pour the day out of me via sweating my [bleep] off, again hustle home to shower and make myself a home cooked meal, and then crawl into bed before midnight so that I could start it all over again at 6-too-freaking-early o’clock.

When I read that sentence it makes me nauseated!

5 days a week I would push to accomplish all of those tasks – 5 days in a row! That’s mental, but that’s what “not being bored” felt like to me.

If I had to relive that routine after the peace I’ve been able to harvest from this experience, I… I actually don’t know what I would do other than say no.

Look inward and decide that although you’ve been forced out of your old routine it’s truly for the best. Your old routine, even you have to admit, had to have flaws somewhere that you had wished you could’ve done something about… and now you have been given the opportunity to do so!

Take the challenge to face your emotions this week.

Don’t mistake depth of feeling for sadness.

Don’t mistake any sense of the unknown for fear.

And don’t mistake any sense of peace for boredom.

Reminder to Just Say Yes!
