6 April 2020 – You Create Your Own Sunshine

Weekly YES Quote!

“Most of the shadows of this life are caused by standing in our own sunshine.”

Ralph Waldo Emerson

Weekly Reflection

I don’t often like to start reflections with a question, but this week I feel compelled to: what in your life makes the sun shine?

Not literal sunshine… I understand enough of the science behind that… but what in your life makes you beam so brightly that you can barely contain your smile?

Is it your family, your job, your extracurricular activities, your studies, your passions, your conversations with others… what is it?

We all have that turn-on switch – that switch that naturally clicks on whenever we’re in our zone… when we’re feeling ourselves.

And damnit doesn’t it feel good to be in our zone! That isn’t a question even though it’s posed as one because I know you feel the same: when you’re doing what you’re good at… what you feel you were born to do… what you excel at… what brings meaning to your life… THAT feeling is your sunshine.

Time passes and you don’t even notice because you’re so enraptured by the happiness that’s enveloped you.

Then all of a sudden or maybe after a moment of doubt you lose it, and you cast a shadow.

You lose the fun, the desire, the steadfast “I’m such a boss” feeling that you were manifesting… and why is that?

We’ve been programmed to think the grass is always greener on the other side – and that’s absolute hogwash. Just when everything seems perfect you start to doubt it and wonder if it really is everything you wanted or if it could be better because of some arbitrary X, Y, and/or Z.

And I’m here to tell you that the grass is greenest when you’re happiest – when you’re casting your brightest sunshine.

There is no other measure on the quality of life than when you’re at your happiest. You have all the power in the world to be at your best, and you have all the power in the world to be at your worst. No one else has this power other than you.

We can get in our own way, or we can step into the sunshine and cast that bright, shining light all around us to show just how glorious and magnificent we are.

I used to struggle with who I was and why I was the way I was. I tend to be loud, out there, possibly uncouth, and varied from the norm. Basically, I’m generally an eclectic taste for most.

At one point or another I didn’t fully love me, and I wished to be anyone other than me – I was casting a horrific shadow when I finally stepped into the most glorious sunlight that was my life: my uniquely, fulfilling life.

I decided that I deserved the best because I am the best – exactly as I am.

And what did that feeling get me – everything. And what did the prior feelings get me… well, they made me paranoid in thinking I wasn’t skinny enough, I wasn’t athletic enough, I wasn’t smart enough… all of these shadows of “not enoughs.”

These shadows you cast when you’re in your brightest light are negative, detrimental to your growth, and they only do harm without bringing any good.

When you look at your “not enough” list I want you to really analyze it – why is it that you feel you aren’t enough? Why are you casting a massive shadow when the sun is shining so brightly on you?

Did someone say something to you? If someone did, they aren’t you and they don’t have a say about you.

Did something happen to you? Life experiences can make us stronger and better and enrich the beauty within if we let it, or we can choose to wallow in a woe is me pattern.

Did you decide one day that you just simply weren’t enough without any concrete evidence to support your justification? Again, you’re the only person that can cast a shadow on your life. You have all the power in the world to reverse this mentality if you choose to do so.

I could ask you “did X” all day long to beat my point into the ground.

All I want you to know is, through this reflection, when your sun shines the brightest there is always a shadow cast and only you can prevent that shadow from enveloping the bright light you’ve created by simply being you, embracing you, and striving to be a better you.

Weekly Challenge

I challenge you to always strive for better… for you always deserve the best and a stagnant persona doesn’t grow with you to make you into that better you.

I challenge you this week to feel as your best self because you deserve it and are truly your best self even if you don’t quite believe it.

I challenge you to cast that shadow aside and focus solely on the light that’s emanating from you.

I also challenge you to appreciate what you have and who you are right now. You’re amazing and the grass is greenest under your feet!

Better yet, I challenge you to challenge yourself. You are your biggest cheerleader, you are your biggest go-getter, and you are your strongest, most resilient advocate.

You don’t cast a shadow when you step in front of the sunshine – you glow and everything else around you glows.

Think about a time you were truly on top like nothing could touch you or bring you down. How did you feel in this moment?

Hold that feeling – that feeling of power and awesomeness.

For, as long as you hold that feeling, you’re invincible.

Truly – don’t scoff or roll your eyes – when you believe in yourself there is nothing that can stand in your way.

For only when you step into the sunshine can you cast a shadow of doubt. No one else can cast that shadow for you.

It may be uncomfortable or foreign to you to relish in the sunshine glowing on your skin for pursuing and bettering yourself… that’s a positive feeling. You should always feel good for simply being you. Let the warmth of the sun shine on you. Feel the greatness that is you.

So this week and always, I want you to reflect and hold onto why you’re the fabulous person you are – write down the reasons that you’re awesome so that you can reflect on them every single morning when you wake up, afternoon when you’re taking a much deserved break, and evening before you go to bed so that you can set your intention for the following day. Let it drive you forward.

I feel your awesomeness, and I may not have been graced by your presence yet.

I see your awesomeness, and I may not have laid eyes upon you yet.

I know your awesomeness because you’re here – you’re taking this moment for yourself to read this post to get your blood flowing for the week and many weeks to follow – and through this action you’ve already begun to shine.

Peace out shadow – you have lots of shining to do.
