Weekly YES Quote!
“In order to kick ass you must first lift up your foot.”
I’ve been battling with some weird mood swings since California put the shelter-in-place order into effect.
I’m not saying I’m surprised… we’ve all had to make sacrifices in order to prevent the rapid spreading of COVID-19… but man oh man do I crave normalcy again as I’m sure you do as well.
- My work routine has become more remote (actually loving that since I’m able to be more productive, though I miss my amazing coworkers who swing by my desk on the regular to say hi and inquire about my day and inform me about theirs).
- My exercise routine has taken a serious shift (I’m starting to run around my neighborhood more now that my favorite studio has temporarily closed – missing my lovely fitness friends and gnarly workouts… like, hardcore).
- My human interaction has gone 95%+ virtual and the other portion of the time it’s paranoid 6 feet of social distancing, which… let’s be honest… we all need that touch to complete the human interaction even if it’s a high five.
- My dining out game is the lowest it’s ever been (I have a happy wallet, but I’m totally missing my Sunday solo dinner dates at my regular San Diego pho spot – phonatic phosho right here).
The above, just to be clear, aren’t heavy sacrifices that I’ve had to make, but they are key things in my life that bring me joy which I’ve had to give up or alter – and that sucks.
Maybe your sacrifices are heavier, lighter, or similar – it doesn’t matter. Your lifestyle in some way has been altered, and that’s frustrating if not uncomfortable and extremely difficult.
As humans we crave routine even if our routine is seemingly routine-less. And once that routine has been interrupted with an inability to forecast when we can gain it back, we begin to feel a tad helpless.
That was the conclusion I came to this morning: I’m tired of feeling helpless.
There is always something we can do to turn this frown upside down, look at the glass half full, see the light at the end of the tunnel…
This quarantine, this shelter-in-place, this slow-down of life gives us each the opportunity to reflect inward to assess our lives, see where we’re at, measure ourselves against our goals… It gives us the opportunity to take action to grow ourselves in a way that maybe we’ve been putting on the back-burner because we just didn’t have enough time.
It gives us the opportunity to kick some ass!
You heard me – left, right, left foot up in the air and kicking! Or maybe you prefer right, left, right – as long as you’re ready to lift those feet to make moves baby!
So what is it you’ve been needing or wanting? What is that special it which will help you to grow as a person?
Grip it tight because it’s yours. You are not helpless when it comes to achieving it, and you are fully capable and in control of going for it no matter what is going on around you.
I want you to repeat after me, “I am not helpless. I am in control of my life. I will use this opportunity to reflect inward and pursue what I need in order to grow as a person.”
After saying these words aloud you might be thinking to yourself, “I can’t do that… I’m not physically able to go to my place of work.” Or “I can’t do that… I don’t have the first clue how to even get started with something like this.” Or even “I can’t do that… I don’t even know what that is!”
Well I’m here to deliver you the same message Jen Sincero delivered to me when I was reading her motivational and amazing book, You Are a Badass: How to Stop Doubting Your Greatness and Start Living an Awesome Life:
“In order to kick ass you must first lift up your foot.”
That’s right yes ma’ams and sirs, you can achieve that it!
Sure… you can’t physically go into the office or actual establishment that you’ve grown accustomed to frequenting to and from, but you can make a plan and set an intention.
Maybe you don’t know how to get started and that’s okay too! Take some time today or during the week to do some research or phone someone who you’ve seen succeed with something similar so you can pick their brain about it. For remember, if you knew all along how to get there you’d likely already be there.
And no worries if your mind is blank, and you’re at a loss for what the heck it is.
Put your phone, laptop, tablet away; turn off the TV, radio, Spotify; and go to a space solely your own without any distractions. Sit or lie down comfortably and close your eyes. Take a deep breath in, then let it out. Focus on your breathing and let everything else go.
Once your mind is reset give another try at defining what that it is. When you’re ready, it will come to you.
You are the only person who can hold you back from growing into the person you crave to be or gaining fulfillment by satisfying a need.
We are never helpless or without control, but we must first take the step required to get us moving in the direction we need to go.
Now go forth and kick some serious ass this week!
Do not let yourself be limited by your surroundings or hesitate to reach or step in a direction you’ve never gone before.
And if it feels like no one else is with you on this journey, know that I am – I’ll be right beside you helping you to kick ass because I know you’re worth it and you deserve it.
Reminder to Just Say Yes!
As always, say yes to experiences that present themselves to you! Life is full of fun and wonder – don’t be stuck at home wondering what life could be like, should be like, would be like… drop that nonsense! Get out there, say yes, and never look back!
